Degree-day forecasting is the oldest trick in the heating-fuel business and still the most valuable: predict how fast each tank drains from how cold it has been, and deliver just in time. The catch has always been keeping the math honest per customer. FillDesk Pro does that automatically.

What a K-factor is, and why yours should update itself

A K-factor is gallons of fuel a customer burns per heating degree day. A drafty farmhouse has a high K-factor; a tight new build has a low one. The problem with hand-set K-factors is that they drift — a new furnace, a finished basement, a kid moving out — and a stale K-factor means either an emergency run-out or a wasted half-full delivery. FillDesk Pro recalculates each customer's K-factor after every delivery, using the actual gallons delivered and the actual degree days since the last fill, so it tracks reality instead of a guess made three winters ago.

Free, public-domain weather data

FillDesk Pro pulls daily high and low temperatures from the US National Weather Service and NOAA — public-domain data, no API key, no per-call fee — and computes heating degree days against each customer's base temperature. The daily fill report

Every morning, FillDesk Pro projects each tank's current level from its last known level, its K-factor, and the degree days since. The fill report ranks customers by how close they are to their trigger point, so your dispatcher builds a full-truck route around the tanks that genuinely need it. Monitors make it sharper

Attach a tank monitor and FillDesk Pro compares the live telemetry reading against the forecast. When they diverge — a monitor reads far lower than the model expected — that customer is flagged, so a usage change or a sensor problem surfaces as an alert instead of a surprise. This is real divergence detection, not a passive gauge readout.

Why it beats a fixed delivery schedule

A lot of dealers still run automatic customers on a fixed calendar — every so many weeks, cold or mild. That guarantees two kinds of waste: half-full "top-off" deliveries that burn truck time in a warm stretch, and run-outs when a cold snap arrives ahead of the next scheduled stop. Degree-day forecasting replaces the calendar with the weather. In a mild December your trucks are not chasing tanks that are still three-quarters full; in a brutal cold snap the fill report surfaces the tanks that are about to bottom out days before the calendar would have.
